A Character from ;A Gathering of Old Men; and ;Sula;.
This essay discusses the pride and self-affirmation that is developed by certain characters in Ernest Gaines' "A Gathering of Old Men" and Toni Morrison's "Sula". In Gaines' work, it could be argued that the 18 old African-Americans represent one character, since all of them symbolize a certain self-respect that is embodied in the Black community. Sula represents pride and self-affirmation in how she tries to find herself after being rejected. 3 pgs. Bibliography lists 2 sources.
